For weeks after the Sept. 11 attacks, Oakwood's Bobby Zahn worked at Ground Zero helping bring electricity to recovery efforts. Nearly 15 years later and recently retired from Con Edison, Zahn has cancer and is one of thousands of New Yorkers navigating the federal Victim Compensation Fund. "I thank God that we have it -- though it would be great if it worked a little bit faster," said Zhan, who was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in 2009.

More than 5,400 Ground Zero responders and others who lived, worked or went to school near the fallen Twin Towers have come down with 9/11-linked cancers, a grim tally that has tripled in the past 2¹/₂ years. As of June 30, 5,441 people enrolled in the WTC Health Program have been diagnosed with 6,378 separate cancers, with some struck by more than one type, officials said. More.
