Purpose: The community garden has developed from a former dumping ground, so beautifying the whole site is a long term goal. The winter walkway is one memorial component in response to the influx of visitors after September 11. It was truly a spontaneous, community-generated effort with donations of plants pouring in, and various school, forestry, and senior groups volunteering their time and energy.

Reason site was selected: The garden was in the process of being made prior to September 11, but it took on a new meaning and more importance after the tragedy. The director noted a ten-fold increase in visitors, many from far away and out of state, that would go to the gardens to seek solace and would leave plants in tribute.

Events planned for site: They held a dedication planting and poetry reading in late September.

Do you believe your memorial is a sacred place?: Their site is a positive, shared public space that the community has come to value. While the director sees it as a secular public space, she notes that many outsiders view it as sacred and some treat it like a grave site.
