The stories of survivors of the Pentagon attack are a continuing source of inspiration. Our Stories section is a growing compilation of the truly heroic actions of so many on 9/11. They are a record of the confusion and courage, the unity and loss, that make up our collective memory of that day.

When the plane struck, I was in my E-ring office that has a window looking out onto the ceremonial parade grounds (Washington Monument side, opposite the impact area). My day started like any other working on the personal staff of the SECDEF.

At the time, I was working as a computer tech in the pentagon supporting the Headquarters Department of the Army (HQDA). My desk was in room 1D639 and I had no idea that the planes had already hit the world trade centers.

I was working at the Pentagon as a Soldier in the Army. I worked for the Defense Finance and Accounting Office. I was at work the morning of 9/11. I was at my desk when the plane hit. It took us roughly 20 minutes to get out.
