Description: Purpose:New York Restoration Project will plant a grove of flowering, hardwood trees in Highbridge Park as Living Memorial to honor those who lost their lives as a result of the Sept. 11 tradegy. Following the events of September 11th, parks became important gathering places for reflection. NYRP's project will improve Highbridge Park as a flourishing community asset to provide inner-city residents with a palce of healing and solace.

Reason site was selected:since 1996, NYRP has been involved in the reclamation of historic Highbridge Park, which was built in 1888 and fell into disrepair after the city's mid-1970s financial crisis. Former Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern once described the park as the city's "most damaged, most cluttered" major park. To date, NYRP has removed 50,000 tons of debris from Highbridge Park, including 2,000 tires, and made significant headway in beautifying the park and developing free programming there for at-risk youth.

Events planned for site:Tree and groundcover plantings and ongoing site maintenance will be executed by NYRP's permanent field staff and AmeriCorpos crew, as well as community and corporate volunteers.
