Steel was melted down in a foundry in Amite, LA. The ship is expected to be completed in 2007. It has survived the 9/11 attacks and hurricane Katrina. The motto of the ship is "Never Forget".
This ship was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the WTC. She is the fifth in a new class of warship designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready marines to be delivered ashore by helicoptors and assault craft.
