The 23 Lost Alumni from Xaverian High School

About:

The 9/11 Eternal Flame Memorial which stands in front of
the Xaverian High School has become a well-known icon of the
tragic day for the entire Bay Ridge Community.
The triptych is composed of three pieces of polished black
granite.
The left panel bears the engraved names of the 23 Xaverian
alumni lost in the destruction the World Trade Center.
The top portion of the tall center panel portrays a cross
superimposed on top of the Twin Towers. Encased at its base
is a piece of structural steel recovered from Ground Zero,
presented to the school by the NYC Office of Emergency
Management.
The right panel is engraved with the words: “All Lost Some.
Some Lost All.”
The monument is illuminated by an Eternal Flame encased
in a lantern, symbolically recalling the words of Jesus, “I am
the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in
darkness.” (John 8:12)
The monument was a gift of the late alumnus Dr. Philip
Whitcome, Class of 1966, who served as Chairman of the Board
of Trustees.
Since its dedication, the school has carefully maintained the
monument with landscaping and American flanking the side
