Biography:

Det James Albanese contracted cancer from inhaling toxic materials that he, along with other first responders, were exposed to during the rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero, caused by the terrorist attacks that took place on September 11, 2001.

Following the attack, Det. Albanese worked numerous hours a week at ground zero for several months devoting all of his time and effort to help in anyway that he could. In November 2013, he was diagnosed with cancer, and succumbed to his illness on August 13, 2014.

On April 28, 1987, Detective James Albanese was appointed to the New York City Police Department and assigned to the 49th precinct in the borough of the Bronx. Due to his outstanding police work and passion for helping others, he was transferred to the Manhattan South Narcotics Division, where he spent the remainder of his career. He is survived by his wife Jeanette, a retired Sergeant of the New York City Police Department, and his two children Francesco and Bianca.

K-9 Jamie is named in honor of Detective James Albanese and is handled by Police Officer Michael Cautillo, nephew of Detective James Albanese.
