Tom was a Character! He loved to Laugh! Good naturedly at others, with others and at himself. A 6' 4" Giant of a man. We often kidded him for his inability to Disco dance having the rhythm and beat of Frankenstein in the Mel Brooks Movie. The "Tom Hetzel Dance" was a favorite when we went to Baltimore for our annual Yankee trip. Can you picture 30 Firemen dancing in the aisle of a Bus? He just laughed and shook his head.
Tom loved being a Firefighter. He loved it! Diana and I joked that their first few Dates together were spent chasing Fire Engines and listening to his Scanner. Not true! He was consumed by what the Fire Service was all about: Helping people. Tom served in the Franklin Square & Munson Fire Department for 15 years. He proudly served as Lieutenant and Captain of Ladder 713. It was in his first few years in Franklin Square that he realized that this is what he wanted to do for a living: Become a Firefighter in the greatest Fire Department in the world: The FDNY.
His six-year career was spent constantly learning, always absorbing new things; Yet teaching the new Guys and always performing his duty whatever it took!
For the last 2 years, Tom had been arduously and diligently studying for the upcoming Lieutenant's test that was scheduled for this upcoming Saturday. We know he would have triumphed! We know he would have been a great boss. He was a great firefighter who did his job well!
