Susan was my client. My staff and I had spent several months working with her on seminar that was planned for October of 2001. Susan was a delight to work with.
On the morning of September 11th, 2001, a few of my employees and I were on an 8:30am conference call with Susan. About 15 minutes into the call, Susan’s phone went silent. We assumed we just lost her cell phone signal (a common thing in those days).
When we soon became aware of the attacks on the World Trade Center, we assumed she was safe - as her office was many blocks away at Penn Station. But we learned later that horrible day that Susan had a mid-morning meeting at the World Trade Center - and so to avoid being late, she went there early to join our 8:30am call from the Windows on the World restaurant at the top of tower. We were on the phone with her when the plane hit.
Every September 11th, I find myself thinking about Susan. While I never met her in person, I’d spent a lot of time talking with her over those several months. She really seemed to like working in New York City. We had looked forward to finally meeting the next month at the seminar we had been working on - which sadly never occurred.
