Biography:

There were no limits to Robert Twomey's love for history and science. Botany, entomology, viniculture, the Civil War: he was always reading something and loved talking about it. "He retained everything," said his wife, Marie Twomey.

Mr. Twomey, 48, did graduate work in biology in his 20's, but never finished his dissertation and got into finance when he and his wife had the first of their two boys 18 years ago. He worked as a trader on the American Stock Exchange with Ric Harvey, his brother-in-law, at Harvey Young Yurman, and dreamed of retiring to teach in public school. On Sept. 11, he was at a weekly breakfast meeting at Windows on the World.

When he was not reading, he loved to ride his bike from his home in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, to Breezy Point, Queens. He knew a lot about Sheepshead Bay, where his family had lived for more than a century. It was one of the many things he shared with his wife, whom he married when they were both 19. "I'm living in the house my grandparents bought in 1905," Mrs. Twomey said. "Bob's father played in the construction site of this house."
