Meredith Lynn Whalen, 23, of Hoboken, N.J., was one of the bright, rising stars at Fred Alger Management.
Though she had worked for the investment firm for only 15 months, Whalen was already handling some of the company's biggest and most prestigious accounts in her position as a research associate.
The hard-working Whalen found time to take advantage of New York's bustling nightlife, and regaled co-workers with tales of her evenings out on the town.
"She was a good kid," said her mother, Patricia. "She always had such a smile."
Whalen was working in her office on the 93rd floor of the World Trade Center's north tower when a hijacked jetliner crashed into the building on the morning of Sept. 11.
Since then, her mother has received dozens of calls from Meredith's acquaintances.
"I never realized how many friends she had," Patricia said.
Whalen grew up in Canton, Mich., where she developed a love of horses and riding. Her ultimate dream was to own a horse farm in Kentucky, though her short-term goal was to become a portfolio manager.
Whalen competed on the cross-country and swimming teams at Plymouth-Salem High School. After graduating with honors, she attended the University of Michigan in nearby Ann Arbor, graduating in 2000 with a degree in business.
Whalen got a taste of the investment field by working at Goldman Sachs in London during the summer before her senior year. But she wanted to work for a smaller firm where she thought she would receive more personalized training.
She was recruited to work in New York by David Alger, a co-owner of Fred Alger Management. He was among 35 employees of the firm who died in the terrorist attack.
Whalen grew more protective of her mother after the death of her father, Henry, from lung cancer in 1989, when she was 11.
Mother and daughter were planning to leave from Barcelona, Spain on Sept. 15 for a Mediterranean cruise.
In addition to her mother, Whalen is survived by a sister, Kristen; two half-sisters, Deborah Whalen and Kathryn Purcell; and a half-brother, Stephen Whalen.

Hi Meredith I am a high
Hi Meredith I am a high school student. When you died i was in kindergarden. I may have not known you but due to hijackers that crashed a plane into the tower you were in i lost a fellow horse lover. If i may speak for everyone that was affected by 9/11 i must say losing such a beautfil young girl like yourself is horrfying. And even though it was such a terrible thing that happened our country was bond together after 9/11 You and everyone that died that day are certainly missed.
