Joseph Kelly's friends and family knew never to praise anything he showed them. If they did, they were sure to find the items at their homes the next day.
"He was like that — he had a big heart," said Mr. Kelly's brother, James, a New York City firefighter. "He would just give it away."
Joseph Kelly, 40, who lived in Oyster Bay, N.Y., was a broker for Cantor Fitzgerald, a husband and the father of four children, ages 8, 6, 5 and 2. His wife, Susan, is pregnant with their fifth child, who is due in May. He was also one of six siblings and a compulsive do-gooder.
"He once left a brand-new car on my parents' driveway because he was going to London for a few days and just never picked it up," his brother said.
At the memorial service, Jim Kelly said he learned that his brother's generosity extended beyond the family. People spoke of his kindness, and told how, at auctions for various charities, he bought the leftovers.
"Whatever people didn't buy, he got, so he had a room full of stuff, a lot of sports memorabilia," his brother said. Luckily, Mr. Kelly was a sports fan. On the last night of his life, he took his two older children, Christopher and Thomas, to a Yankees game.

MY FRIEND
The greater the Man the larger the loss. It's catastrophic. Honored to have called him friend, and remain horrified and angry at what he, and his family endured. Have to remember great Men are rare, as was Joe and a gift on loan.

Joseph A. Kelly
I was at the North Tower pool on June 28, 29 or 30, 2014, when I saw someone leave a Red Rose in Joseph A. Kelly name. I will return in late Sept 2024, over 10 year later and I will try to leave another Rose for him, someone I never knew.
