Manuel DelValle Jr., a seven-year veteran of the New York City Fire Department, was with Engine Company No. 5 and responded on 9/11, even though he had just finished a tour of duty.
DelValle went to high school in Brookline, Mass.
In 2003, the Boston Public Health Commission named the DelValle Institute in his honor. The institute provides hazards training for health and public safety personnel.
The University of Maryland, which he graduated from in 1992, has a memorial scholarship in his name, for students from an inner city studying at the Fire Protection Engineering Program.
A street was renamed for him at 14th Street and First Avenue in 2006, and he was posthumously promoted to lieutenant by the Fire Department, with a plaque in the firehouse in his memory.
"We didn't need medals or flags to know it because it was always clear, Bro," wrote a college friend on a tribute site. "You grabbed life by the horns and took it for a ride in overdrive."

Manny was a man who my family always loved. He lives in all of us and is deeply missed by all. Manny was the best cousin brother nephew grandson & son there will ever be. He is a hero to us all and we look at his missed smile in the pictures that were taken of him throughout his life. WE LOVE YOU BABY & KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE THERE WAITING WITH OPEN ARMS WHEN IT S OUR TURN TO RISE UP TO HEAVEN.
