I am a sophomore at Paola High School, I am doing a project on 9/11 and got to research about James. He really does seem like a great guy, I am so sorry you lost him. I hope you know he is a hero. I am a senior at Paola High School, and I am doing a project on 9/11. I wanted to share that I've learned about James and the kind of person he was. It's clear he was a good man who touched the lives of many, and his memory will surely live on through all of you.

On September 11, 2026, my adult son Ashton and I completed a remembrance walk through our neighborhood in Chesapeake, Virginia, to honor the 343 FDNY firefighters lost 25 years ago.

Ashton is autistic and has had a deep love of firefighters and the fire service for many years. That love is what inspired us to turn our walk that day into a remembrance of the 343. We carried a printed list of their names and read as many aloud as we could while we walked. Whenever we encountered an American flag along our route, we stopped and saluted.

James Amato of Squad 1 was among the firefighters whose names we had the privilege of reading. His name can also be heard in the Reel we created from our walk.

Twenty-five years later and hundreds of miles away in Virginia, James’s name was spoken and his sacrifice was remembered. I hope his family, friends, and FDNY brothers know that people who never had the privilege of knowing him are still saying his name.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸🚒

I am a freshman at Paola High School, and I am doing a research project about someone who died due to 9/11. I got to learn about James. He was a fire department captain, and from what I've learned, he was the kind of person who always helped and liked to be the first person to respond to an emergency. He will never be forgotten, and I hope you know that.
