Join us for an extraordinary evening at VOICES Always Remember Gala, as we honor ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro and 9/11 Day Co-Founders Jay Winuk and David Paine. A highlight of the evening will be a musical performance by Broadway star, Julie Reiber from the Tony award-winning hit, Come From Away. VOICES longtime friend, ESPN’s Mike Greenberg will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
“This year’s theme, A Night of Champions, shines a spotlight on three extraordinary individuals whose leadership and legacy have had a profound and long-lasting impact on healing the nation,” stated Mary Fetchet, VOICES Executive Director. “Their inspirational efforts have supported and unified our communities, exemplifying football great Walter Payton’s famous quote, ‘We are stronger together than we are alone.’”
Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman of ESPN - VOICES 2024 Leadership Honoree
Under Jimmy’s leadership, ESPN documented how sports united the nation in the aftermath of 9/11. His important contribution toward the development of The Comeback Season Exhibit at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum and subsequent ESPN television special reflects Jimmy’s personal commitment to inspire and promote healing in the face of tragedy.
The Comeback Season Exhibit and television broadcast showcased how in the aftermath of 9/11, sports helped our nation heal by bringing communities together and offering a sense of normalcy during a time of national grief. The exhibit and broadcast captured the iconic moments when athletes, teams, and fans from across the country rallied in solidarity, providing emotional relief, and a renewed sense of hope and resilience.
Jay Winuk and David Paine, Co-founders of 9/11 Day - VOICES 2024 Legacy Honorees
On September 11, 2001, Jay’s brother Glenn J. Winuk, an attorney, volunteer firefighter and EMT, was killed in the line of duty at the World Trade Center. Inspired by his brother’s devotion to community service and courageous actions, Jay Winuk joined David Paine in 2002 as co-founder in helping to build the 9/11 Day Observance initiative. Their efforts led to the establishment of September 11th as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance under federal law.
9/11 Day is a non-profit organization that orchestrates the largest annual day of charitable engagement in US history with tens of millions of Americans engaging in good deeds and acts of service in honor of those lost, injured and sickened as a result of the terrorist attacks, as well as in tribute to those who rose in service in the aftermath. Among its many programs, 9/11 Day stages large-scale volunteer service projects each anniversary in numerous cities throughout the nation.
Funds raised from the Always Remember Gala support VOICES programs, including support services for victims’ families, responders and survivors, educational initiatives and preparedness trainings.
