Internship Program

 

Our internship program is open to high school, undergraduate and graduate students looking to broaden their experiences and learn from working at a non-profit organization. High school applicants come with a range of interests, and college students may be from any major or discipline. VOICES internships have prepared over 200 students for careers in public service, social work, communications, event planning, business, and information technology. Applicants must have relevant experience, be self-motivated, have the ability to work independently as well as a part of a team, and must be able to commit to a regular schedule.

VOICES College and Post Graduate Internship Program

College students can participate in internship programs in their area of interest during the semester or during their summer vacation. This program provides hands-on experience for students interested in 9/11 issues, communications, public policy reform, event planning, social work, business, and information technology.

 

Social Services Internship

Responsibilities

  • Assist Director of Support Services with case management, administration and clinical programs related to the social services needs of 9/11 family members, survivors, and rescue and recovery workers. This will include VOICES support of individuals directly impacted by acts of mass violence or terrorism in addition to those within the 9/11 community.
  • Assist with program development and outreach for Annual Remembrance Symposium. Interns are welcome to attend but are not expected to do so since events occur during academic semester.
  • Through internal training become proficient in understanding and using VOICES database for interactions with those requiring assistance from our social workers.
  • Assist with major projects that VOICES is undertaking to better understand current models for community response to acts of mass victimization from a key stakeholder standpoint, which will lead to a proposed community framework.
  • Assist with other general team projects as necessary. There will be opportunities to coordinate projects with our multidisciplinary staff.
  • Internships normally start with orientation the third week of May and conclude in early August. In general, most interns take one week off for vacation.
 

Communications Internship

Responsibilities

  • Participate in planning and implementing VOICES overall communications plan, which includes newsletters, e-communications, advertisements, social media, and various print materials. This is for both 9/11 specific communications and other incidents of mass violence or terrorism through the Wolfgruber Institute.
  • Help promote VOICES-sponsored events, including our Annual Symposium and Gala, plus other possible events sponsored by partner organizations. Assist in the drafting of brochures, pamphlets, social media, webpages, press releases and email blasts.
  • Research and report on a variety of topics for use on social media and / or VOICES website, including current news stories, legislation, mental health topics and mass victimization articles.
  • Through internal training become proficient in understanding and using VOICES database for interactions with the 9/11 community members and other nonprofit activities.
  • Assist with other general office projects as necessary including assistance with annual summer high school intern project which involves interviewing about ten 9/11 community members about their 9/11 experience and what has transpired since – becomes a film with messages of resiliency.
  • Internships normally start with orientation the third week of May and conclude in early August. In general, most interns take one week off for family vacations.
 

Research Internship

Responsibilities

  • Conduct literature reviews, interviews or other tasks related to any current VOICES research projects.
  • Help expand VOICES Wolfgruber Institute by including research materials – such as After-Action Reports, published research documents, etc.
  • Manage annual surveys and feedback from members of our database.
  • Through internal training become proficient in understanding and using VOICES database for interactions with the 9/11 community members and other nonprofit activities.
  • Assist with other general office projects as necessary.
  • Internships normally start with orientation the third week of May and conclude in early August. In general, most interns take one week off for vacation.
 

Information Technology Internship - Graphics, Data Entry & Website

Responsibilities

  • Modify digital content for the VOICES 9/11 Living Memorial Digital Archive Project, which includes creating online tributes that commemorate the stories and lives lost on 9/11.
  • Manage current content and develop enhancements to the VOICES website, including formatting and uploading information and multimedia elements.
  • Assist with other general office projects as necessary.
 

Archiving Internship

Responsibilities

  • Help create and maintain internal library system for VOICES materials.
  • Scan photographs, documents and other files for archival purposes.
  • Organize and tag digital content as necessary for database storage.
  • Collaborate with Creative Director and assist with tasks related to the VOICES 9/11 Living Memorial Digital Archive Project.
 

Videography Internship

Responsibilities

  • Assist in all aspects of video interviews, including handling of equipment, technology, and production materials.
  • Shoot and edit footage of VOICES sponsored events.
  • Organize and edit footage from VOICES video archive.
  • Assist with other multimedia and Institute projects as necessary.
 

 

VOICES High School Internship Program

High school students can volunteer after school, in special programs during the spring semester of senior year, or during the summer. During summer vacation, the VOICES office offers a program for highly motivated rising high school seniors.

The students research a 9/11 topic of their choice, film interviews and then edit a short film. The film is part of a presentation that is shown to local high school students and community members. Videos from past years are available to view on our website.
