Who We Help
Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, VOICES has been helping families and communities heal after tragedy. After almost two decades of providing victims’ families, survivors and responders with critical support, we are building on our expertise with new programming, training, education, and resources to help those on their path to resilience, and to better serve our growing community. Today, VOICES is meeting the needs of an even larger community who have been affected by COVID-19.
We pride ourselves as a premier organization that recognizes the importance of promoting positive mental health care and wellness for people faced with adversity. Your support will advance our vision to ensure that those impacted by tragedy receive the long-term care they need to ensure healing and resilience in their lives.
Voices of September 11th was created to meet the urgent needs of the families who lost loved ones on 9/11 to obtain accurate information and to navigate complicated systems. Families were looking for a single source of information about such diverse issues as how to file for a death certificate and how to obtain assistance from social service agencies, local and national charities and other organizations.
Many thousands of people escaped the towers and the Pentagon after the 9/11 attacks and thousands more lived, worked or went to school in Lower Manhattan. Many of these individuals lost friends and jobs or were displaced from their homes, workplaces and schools. Some have suffered physical and mental health illnesses.
For months after the attacks, 9/11 responders worked tirelessly in the rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site. Many of them later experienced serious mental and physical illnesses as a direct result of this work. Our social workers have conducted teleconference and in-person support groups for 9/11 first responders.
When attacks of mass violence occur, there is an impact on the larger community. In fact, many times there is a global impact - when families, friends and even the general public from around the country and the world become part of a grieving community.
