The community is mourning the loss of one of its true heroes following the death of longtime volunteer firefighter and selectman John Sapienza over the weekend. Sapienza died in his home Saturday after a long battle with cancer. He was 80 years old. More.

Halloween is the last day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Doctors have seen a spike of breast cancer cases among people who worked at Ground Zero after 9/11. Hundreds of people from the area were killed or injured in the collapse of the World Trade Center 18 years ago. The lingering health impacts of 9/11 continue to emerge, now mainly with cancer. Governor Tony Evers made a stop in Kewaskum on Thursday, Oct. 31. He signed a bill establishing the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial Highway and the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial and Education Center. Five days after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in September of 2017, Bill Keegan, a retired lieutenant with the Port Authority Police of New York, and a band of New York City firemen, police officers and tradesmen from his nonprofit HEART 9/11 were there on the ground to help. Soon after, actor Ramon Rodriguez, with family on the island, told Keegan he wanted to aid their efforts, and raised more than $500,000 for HEART 9/11’s work to replace missing roofs and rebuild entire homes for free.

These heroic Port Authority workers are finally getting their just rewards. The agency’s board has voted to restore an extra yearly vacation day to employees who went above and beyond during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The move comes after The Post exposed the stingy agency’s actions in removing the “medal day” reward from employees when it implemented cost-cutting measures in 2011. More.

A former NYPD detective and 9/11 survivor advocate died early Friday from cancer related to his work sifting through the rubble after the Sept. 11 attacks, the Daily News has learned. Dennis Murphy, who traveled to Washington DC in June with other first responders to lobby congress to renew the 9/11 compensation fund bill, was admitted to hospice care at Saratoga Hospital in upstate New York on Tuesday, according to friends. A new special exhibition exploring the almost 10-year search for Osama bin Laden will open on Nov. 15 at the 9/11 Memorial Museum. The exhibition, “Revealed: The Hunt for Bin Laden,” uses declassified objects, documents and testimony to illustrate the complex, highly coordinated process to track and locate bin Laden, al-Qaeda’s founder and the lead perpetrator of the 9/11 attacks.
