The American Legion Legacy Scholarship has awarded over $357,228 in financial aid to 32 children of post-9/11 veterans. The 2021 Legacy Scholarship application deadline was April 15, and the awardees were determined by the Americanism Commission during Spring Meetings, May 5-6. More.

The name of a Secaucus resident who died in the 9/11 attacks will lives on through a newly-acquired Secaucus Police K-9 officer. The ten-month old German Shepherd, “Strobe," is named after Steven Strobert, a 33-year-old Cantor Fitzgerald broker who died in September 11, 2001 attack on the Twin Towers. More.
Dennis Tortorella, Mamaroneck volunteer firefighter, headed to Ground Zero on 9/11
Dennis Tortorella joined fellow Town of Mamaroneck firefighters and headed to New York City to help out on Sept. 11, 2001. That night, they ended up at Ground Zero, fighting the spate of fires that continued to burn in nearby buildings. He died Monday, May 4. He was 75. The cause was 9/11-related cancer, his family said. NYPD Sgt. James P. Bast, who died from 9/11-related illness was honored on April 7 by the Town of Islip with a street in Sayville named after him. Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg was on hand for the ceremony. Sgt. Bast worked on Bloomberg's security detail when he retired after 23 years of service with the NYPD.
