Increased inflammation and immune response may partially explain the excess incidence of prostate cancer among first responders exposed to dust at the World Trade Center after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, according to a study recently published in Molecular Cancer Research. The dust from the World Trade Center contained known carcinogens, such as benzene, asbestos, and dioxins. More.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Zacarias Toro lost his long and valiant battle with cancer June 14 while surrounded by his family in New York. Deputy Toro’s cancer resulted directly from exposures while responding to the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, as determined by the World Trade Center Health Program. His passing is considered a line-of-duty death. More.

The 18th annual “Never Forget 9/11” Ceremony will be held at the Brook Park Veterans Memorial on Sylvia Drive at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 8, to honor and remember the victims of the four hijacked airplanes that crashed into the World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and the fields of Shanksville Pennsylvania. Volunteers, especially those with carpentry skills, are needed for the 15th Day of Caring of the United Way of Horry County. The annual event starts the United Way fund-raising drive for 40-plus nonprofits serving tens of thousands of residents. Day of Caring is on Sept. 11 and the date has special meaning for United Way volunteer Esther Murphy who had worked in the World Trade Center in New York. More.

Twenty-four local leaders from around the country, including Mayor Bill de Blasio, have created a bipartisan coalition in support of reauthorizing the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act as a permanent measure. On Nov. 9, the coalition sent a letter to new U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, urging him to make reauthorizing the Zadroga Act a ‘top priority. More.

Battlefield success against ISIS may produce more terrorism for the West, FBI Director James Comey warned this week. Speaking to a cybersecurity conference at Fordham University Wednesday, Comey predicted that eventually crushing ISIS in its self-proclaimed caliphate in Syria and Iraq will likely result in dispersing terrorists elsewhere.
