A small sapling, barely more than a twig, now stands in Asser-Levy Park surrounded by aged oaks and venerable maples. It will one day grow to be a leafy adult callery pear tree - but to many it’ll remain known as the Survivor Tree.

House passes bill to extend 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund
The House passed the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund bill to permanently fund cash payments for first responders, their families and others who were sickened at Ground Zero. The House voted 402-12 to advance legislation named after three 9/11 first responders who died from cancer-related illnesses linked to their heroics at Ground Zero: James Zadroga, Ray Pfeifer and Luis Alvarez. Researchers say they are close to developing a first-of-its-kind of medical test that could be used to identify post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A Sept. 11 first responder from Dongan Hills who is battling stage 4 liver cancer received a warm welcome home Tuesday night after undergoing extensive surgery. House reveals bill to extend Zadroga Act, bringing it one step closer to approval
The long, hard fight to reauthorize funds for 9/11 survivors is finally coming to an end. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) made public must-pass legislation that includes funding for the Zadroga Act Tuesday night.
