Poetry project planned for 20th anniversary of 9/11
Local artist/poet James Pelletier will partner with Learning Ally (LA), formerly known as Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D), to commemorate the events of Sept. 11, 2001. In 2002, Pelletier and the New York unit of the RFB&D collaborated to create a recording of the 2,977 names of the Sept. 11 victims. The artist/poet is an alumnus of LA/RFB&D. More.
Knoxville woman hikes 1,300 miles in remembrance of the events of Sept. 11
More than 700 miles away from the National 9/11 Memorial in New York City, Knoxville hiker Jan Walker felt a connection in the middle of Cades Cove. Her mileage log told her that when she entered the park, she was on mile 900 of her 1,300 milelong journey. If she were hiking the 9/11 National Memorial Trail — she would be in New York City. More.
Ponaganset planning firewood drive, essay contest in lead-up to 9/11 tribute
An effort to raise awareness of the upcoming 9/11 memorial and traveling museum at Ponaganset High School in April includes a fundraiser, a blood drive and a firewood collection to benefit those in need. PHS teacher Chris Stanley created the event and committee behind Ponaganset Remembers: A Tribute to the 9/11 Fallen. Accompanying events will help spread the word about the 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit, a traveling museum planned for April 28-30 at PHS.
Little Help for New York 9/11 Survivors Eligible for the COVID-19 Vaccine
Carl Sadler is 79 and lives near Lake George, in upstate New York. Nearly 20 years ago, Sadler worked in Manhattan — in the South Tower of the World Trade Center as an executive director at the investment bank Morgan Stanley. On 9/11, he was on the 76th floor when the first plane struck the neighboring North Tower, and he narrowly escaped before the second plane hit his building. Sadler later developed thyroid cancer and asthma, among a host of other long-term illnesses.
South River volunteer fire department will build 9/11 memorial this summer
To honor 343 New York City firefighters who died during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the South River Exempt Firemen’s Association will build a 9/11 memorial. On Sept. 11, 2020, the South River Fire Department’s (SRFD) South River Exempt Firemen’s Association announced that it obtained one of the few remaining pieces of steel from the World Trade Center, according to a prepared statement. A 9/11 Commission for Jan. 6? Possible, but harder this time
Two months after rioters breached the U.S. Capitol, many questions about the Jan. 6 attack remain unanswered. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called for “an outside, independent 9/11-type Commission” to determine the facts and causes of the attack. Spike Lee makes HBO documentary for 9/11 anniversary
Acclaimed film director Spike Lee is making a documentary for HBO charting New York's recovery from the 9/11 terror attacks through to the coronavirus pandemic, WarnerMedia announced Monday. The multi-part documentary will be released to commemorate the 20th anniversary in September 2021 of the coordinated Al-Qaeda attack on the World Trade Center that killed almost 3,000 people. More.
West Lafayette's 9/11 Memorial Display Finds New Home
This memorial has actually been in West Lafayette for 20 years. It has sat on display in the West Lafayette Public Library up until this point. As the building is going through major renovations, the West Lafayette Fire Department thought it was time to find the memorial a new home. More.
